Now, for the 55 million Americans who might benefit from the surgery, space-age technology comes down to Earth to help. The LADARVision system is used by surgeons worldwide to perform laser vision correction. Its development was based on tech- nology originally created by NASA. For its innovative use of this technology, LADARVision was recently inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame and received the prestigious Certified Space TechnologyTM seal. It is the only laser eye surgery system in the world to receive such honors. Our eyes are always in motion, moving up to 50 times per second, even during laser eye surgery. Accurate tracking of eye move- ments during laser eye surgery is a critical aspect of this delicate pro- cedure. This unique laser eye surgery system uses technology, originally developed by NASA to assist spacecraft in delicate ren- dezvous and docking procedures, to track eye movements at a rate of 4,000 times per second-15 times faster than any other system. LADARVision, approved by the FDA in 1998, is the only laser eye surgery system that uses this inno- vative laser tracking technology. As with any medical procedure, there are risks involved with LASIK and not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. Your eye doctor can discuss the risks and benefits associated with LASIK, and help you determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. To learn more about LASIK and to find a doctor in your area using the LADARVision system, go to www.ladarvision.com Could You Have Diabetic Neuropathy And Not Know It? (NAPSI)-Diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) is a serious compli- cation of diabetes that leads to sen- sations of pain and/or numbness, tingling or "pins and needles" in the feet and hands. Although the major- ity of people with diabetes experi- ence symptoms associated with dia- betic neuropathy, only a small minority have been diagnosed with this condition. Nerves send messages to and from your brain about pain, temper- ature and touch. They tell your mus- cles when and how to move. Left untreated, diabetic neuropa- thy can lead to foot injury, infec- tions and even amputations. Symptoms Reporting symptoms to your health care provider is important. Place a check mark (4) next to any symptom you have. Take this list to your next office visit. o My feet hurt at night. o My feet and hands get very cold or very hot. o My feet are numb and feel dead. o I don't feel pain in my feet, even when I have blisters or injuries. o I can't feel my feet when I'm walking. o The muscles in my feet and legs are weak. o I'm unsteady when I stand or walk. o I have trouble feeling heat or cold in my feet or hands. o I have open sores (also called ulcers) on my feet and legs. These sores heal very slowly. o It seems like the muscles and bones in my feet have changed shape. o Other symptoms Treatment For information about treatments available to relieve pain and reduce burning, tingling and numbness, talk with your health care provider. To learn more-and to get your free copy of All About Nerve Damage & Diabetes, the newest title in the Diabetes Advisor series- call the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES or visit the Web site at www.dia- betes.org/neuropathy. This resource is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer Inc. o My feet tingle. o I feel "pins and needles" in my feet. o I have burning, stabbing or shooting pains in my feet. o My feet are very sensitive to touch. For example, sometimes it hurts to have the bedcovers touch my feet. II Cure, Care, Commitment (NAPSI)-It's almost time for the fun part of going back to school- shopping! Want to know what will be hot this year in back- to-school supplies? Read on We've got this year's trends and must-haves to keep you (or your kids) cool, calm and totally organized from the first day through the last final. "Back-to-school supplies have to keep you organized, but they should also be fun," said Kimberly ,Carr, brand manager for Oxford, maker of school and office supplies. "Choose binders, folders and notebooks that do double duty by reflecting your personality while keeping every- thing in order." Here are some suggestions you may want to take note of: Supplies With Color-Back-to- school supplies should be both func- tional and stylish! Did you know that all the fun colors and designs you love can actually help you find items faster? It's tree-if you assign different colors or patterns to each dass or subject, you'll be able to fmd the folder you're looking for with just a glance. This simple strat- egy will save you time, while keep- ing you more organized than ever before. So there's no reason to limit your back-to-school supplies (or yourself) to just one style! One of the hottest brands this sea- son is Oxford-from a wild Exotic line to cool Retro designs, you'll find all the supplies you need in bright colors and fun patterns per- feet for mixing and matching. Plan For It-Tests, projects, games, dances and dates. The life of modem teens and 'tweens is full of commitments. The art to juggling your hectic life is to plan for every- thing, so a planner (also known as an agenda) is perfect for busy teens. Look for one large enough to hold all the notes you'll need to store, but make sure it's compact enough to fit in your book bag. Best way to use your planner? Enter in notes as soon as you hear about your upcoming group proj-ect or paper-you'll have a v'isual reminder of your due dates and game schedules (not to melntion your social life!) every time you glance at the page. Get The Message-You'll need something to carry around all these supplies with, but who wants at bor- ing old backpack? Messenger lbags- the hip, over-the-shoulder style-are a fashion staple that's hotter than ever. Take these textbook totes everywhere, from the school- yard to s]eepovers-they'm fun, versatile and come in almost any color! "Back-to-scbool shopping is fun, so relax and enjoy the experience," added Carr. "Just remember that everything you buy has to work for you." Honor Roll: When back-to-school shopping, look for stylish supplies that will keep you organized from the first day of school through the last fina What's On Your Back To School List? (NAPSI)-Your child's back-to- school list, that is. With more than 33 million students returning to school this year, the back-to-school season means hitting the stores before kids can hit the books. According to more than 500 .moth- ers of grade-school aged children surveyed by Parenting magazine's Mom Connection, there are more items on their children's lists than ever before. Here are some of the results from the survey: "The average American family is spending $45 dollars per child on back-to-school supplies," according to Cheryl Wilbur, Director of Research and Brand Development at Parenting magazine. And moms aren't waiting until the last minute to start their shopping-nearly 90 per- cent of mothers begin their back-to- school shopping at least two weeks before the first day of school, with one out of five beginning their shopping two to three months ahead of time. Necessary Items Back-to-school shopping may be inevitable, yet more than fifty per- cent of mothers actually look for- ward to taking their children to buy school supplies. But their children's lists are longer than they remember from their own childhoods-more than three-fourths of mothers say their children need more items for school than they did as children, with nearly half needing more than twice as many supplies. What's new kids' lists? Over half of morns reported needing to buy hand sani- Approximately 33 million chil- dren will be heading to school this fall. tizers and cleaning products for their kids; while one-third also pro- vide computer supplies, high- lighters, colored pencils and snacks for their children's classrooms. Nostalgic Brands But it's not all new items on today's school supply shopping lists-certain tried and true products still show up year after year. For example, chances are likely that white school glue will be toward the top of the list. Parenting's Morn Connection found that brands such as Elmer's make moms feel nostalgic for the first day of school, and the majority of morns buy at least two bottles of white glue and three glue sticks per school year. According to Elmer's, more than 30 Million U.S. grade school students use Elmer's Washable School glue each year-a product founded in 1947 and used widely ever since.
