WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2005 Bua~-r Btu. r~ PAGE HA The Circulatory system is composed of the heart and blood vessels. The vessels are made up of the arteries, veins, and capillaries. The purpose of the circulatory system is to provide food and oxygen to the tissues and to remove waste from them. The circulatory system also helps the body to fight infections. The human heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist. It is the pump for the blood. Circulation of blood consists of three main divisions. First, pulmonary circulation carries the blood from the heart to the lungs where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is replaced in the red blood cells. Second, the arteries carry the blood from the heart to various parts of the body. The aorta is the largest artery. Capillaries then take the blood from the arteries to the various organs to feed them. This Is the second division of circulation. In the third division of circulation, veins bring the used blood filled with carbon dioxide back to the heart and the cycle repeats. During this process the spleen removes aM blood cells from the circulatory system. Blood pressure is the speed and pressure in which blood flows through the blood vessels. If It Is high, heart disease will result. The pulse detemdnes how hard the heart is working to pump the blood throughout the body. The higher the pulse the harder the heart has to work to pump the blood, the lower the pulse the less work on the heart, . :, :I, : : Cilrle the Wards that yau # : Across, Down, Backn d , AORTA VENA CAVA PULMONARY ARTERY PULMONARY VEINS CORONARY VEINS RIGHT VENTRICLE L FT VENTRI ? ,E Perform the tim activil)' in the chart belmv for one minute.
